I am writing this letter to provide my enthusiastic reference for Steve Hunt. I attended Mr. Hunt’s session at the SERC-NHARO Annual Conference in Greensboro, NC in June 2024. I immediately felt this was going to be a session that would keep me engaged, and it certainly was. Mr. Hunt was detailed and clear on his suggestions for handling emergency situations. He discussed several scenarios which I have never considered. He was very engaged with the attendees in his session and welcomed their prospective. After this session, I hired him to come on site at our Housing Authority to do employee training. Steve has a keen understanding of safety and security and is a natural leader with excellent interpersonal skills and builds strong relationships with clients. His ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and persuasively have made him a trusted advisor. It is my pleasure to write to you concerning Lieutenant Steve Hunt (Retired). I have known Mr. Hunt since 1997, when I worked for the Hickory Police Department. At that time Mr. Hunt was a member of the command staff. During my time at Hickory Police Department, Mr. Hunt became an informal mentor to me, perhaps unbeknownst to him. I watched him conduct himself with the upmost professionalism and observed his respected position in the Hickory community that he earned through consistent community policing.
I have since become the police chief of the Town of Boone. Around 5 years ago I attended a training class taught by Mr. Hunt and one of his associates. I was so impressed with the training that I later contacted Mr. Hunt to bring him to the Boone Police Department to teach all of my officers. Teaching cops on tough issues such as Implicit Bias and Community Policing before the Crisis is not for the inexperienced or the purely academic. Mr. Hunt was able to use research along with his real world experience to address the topics and answer the hard questions by my officers following a period of racial unrest.
Mr. Hunt was well received by my officers and many of my officers commented that they would like to have Mr. Hunt return for additional training. I sat in on his classes with my officers as well. I was very satisfied with the content and the quality of training that Mr. Hunt provided. His topics were relevant and useful.
Mr. Hunt and I were asked to speak at an academic conference hosted by the Southern Criminal Justice Association in 2022. I have personally been able to observe Mr. Hunt present to a much different audience and again was impressed with his knowledge and presentation style. Mr. Hunt also assisted me and the Boone Police Department by acting as a consultant in the development of our first Citizens Police Academy (CPA) in 2023. Mr. Hunt cares about his work, so he came to the opening night of our CPA and presented some opening remarks that gave our agency a greater level of legitimacy.
